Sumay Cheah
Born in 1986
Lives and works in Penang, Malaysia
Sumay Cheah is a multidisciplinary artist based between Malaysia and Singapore, weaving light, scent, sound, and tactile elements into worlds that feel both fleeting and eternal. Her works often bloom from moments of quietude. Soft reflections gathered from stillness, becoming poetry in motion with an interplay of light and shadow and gentle echoes of her Peranakan heritage.
Her creations span intimate pieces as small as 10cm x 10cm to immersive realms over 800 square feet, from hanging sculptures to immersive sensory art experiences and written verse, each inviting viewers into a tender encounter with wonder.
Her recent installation, OH!Tenang, led under OtherHalf Studio, received the SGMARK Award 2024 (Experience Design) and the Golden Pin Design Award 2024 (Spatial Design), honouring her devotion to thoughtful, sustainable, and inclusive artistry.
She continues to champion for Braille Design Language, Design for Greater Good and OH!Kindness Ripple initiatives such as the OH!Convertible Desk Box and OH!Mizuhiki Knotted Bookmarks – each a quiet gesture toward beauty that uplifts all.
