NUMPANG offers international artists a deep engagement with Jakarta’s contemporary art landscape while providing structured opportunities for creative exploration, networking, and professional growth. 

Hosted by RUBANAH Underground Hub, NUMPANG is located in the Jakarta Artist Compound, a creative home for artists in the heart of Jakarta.

Participants will engage with the local art community through curated discussions, gallery visits, and networking sessions with key figures such as Enin Supriyanto and Grace Samboh.

Type of residency:

  1. 1 month residency. Outcome: Open studio
  2. 2 months residency. Outcome: Exhibition
  3. 3 months residency. Outcome: Exhibition

Residency cost: USD 1,500 per month

What’s included:

  1. Private bedroom/studio (6 x 3 meters)
  2. WiFi, electricity, and cleaning services
  3. Access to curators, critics, and established artist
  4. Visit to local galleries, museums, and cultural institutions

What’s not included:

  1. Art materials
  2. Flight ticket to and from Jakarta
  3. Local transport
  4. Shipping costs for artworks after residency
  5. Health insurance
  6. Visa fees
  7. Personal assistant

How to apply?

  • Write your expression of interest in Jakarta as a site for residency. It could either be your plan for the residency, even if this subject to change, or some initial idea on what to look into in Jakarta (up to 1,000 words)
  • ⁠Send us your profile and artist statement that focuses on your interest, research question, and practice (up to 1,000 words)
  • Portfolio with clear captions and descriptions. For film or durational work, please include selected screenshots with links and password (up to 30mb)

  1. Who can apply?
    Artists living and working outside of Indonesia of any age and any discipline.
  1. Can groups or collectives or duos apply?
    Unfortunately, no. This residency is can only cater for individuals. However, members of groups, collectives, or duos may apply individually at the same time with individualized portfolios.
  2. Can I submit additional supporting documents?
    Please keep to the required list. If shortlisted, we may request more materials later.
  3. Can I bring a partner, child, or collaborator?
    Our accommodation is a modest studio room ideally for one person. For particular circumstances, we may be able to support single parents—please reach us before applying.
  4. Will you help with the visa process?
    Yes, we will issue an official invitation letter and assist with relevant paperwork. However, securing the visa is ultimately the artist’s responsibility.
