“ASRI teacher.” That was how the painter Sudarso often writes his own short biography. The main character in this research and exhibition is someone who didn’t formally study painting nor went to an art school. Throughout his life, he went through all eras in Indonesia; from Dutch and Japan colonial times, the bitter days of struggle towards independence, the hopeful moments of “filling the independence”, 32 wary years under dictatorship; and finally the so-called Reformasi.
